Introduction

Nipple areola tattooing (micro-pigmentation) occurs after breast reconstruction. The reconstruction of the nipple can be coloured and given the appearance of an areola through this invasive procedure that uses needles to insert pigments beneath the skin. The colour applied is only partially permanent. This cannot be started until after reconstruction has been completed for at least three months.

It is not essential to undergo the surgery to be entitled to tattooing, it can also be performed to correct areola loss/asymmetry following breast surgery.

Although care is taken to closely match the size and colour of the nipple/areola, the procedure is your choice and not medically necessary therefore it must be appreciated that a perfect match cannot be guaranteed.

Benefits

The purpose of the operation is to enhance the breast's outward look by perfectly matching its size and colour to the opposing (if unilateral)nipple areola. It is impossible to guarantee an exact colour match because pigment selections differ and accurate colouring is challenging to achieve.

You will be able to identify the size and colour without the need for a match if you have had bilateral reconstruction.

A lot of patients discover that the process positively impacts on their quality of life and body image, which raises their self-esteem.

Risks

This is an invasive procedure and therefore not without risk. The main risks include:

  • Allergy to the pigment (patch test carried out at least 48 hours
  • prior to the procedure)
  • Colour mismatch
  • Fading of the tattoo over time
  • Uneven pigment colour
  • Infection
  • Bleeding (initially after procedure)
  • Scarring
  • Skin irritation
  • Some discomfort during and post procedure

Factors affecting the results

  • Medication
  • Natural skin tones
  • Skin characteristics such as; dryness, oily skin, sun damage,
  • thickness and acidity of the skin
  • Alcohol intake
  • Smoking
  • Individual healing ability

When a patient states that they would like to have areola repigmentation, many breast reconstruction surgeons will make a nipple flap. Thus, the artist is not required to produce the same 3D effect. However, every aspect of a natural areola is painstakingly formed if the skin stays flat. If you are a suitable candidate—which is decided after a thorough consultation in which your medical history is carefully taken into account—I can work with whatever the situation presents.

Whether or not you have chosen to have your breasts augmented, you are still able to get an areola tattoo. While tattooing over the scars is still possible, we will try to soften any scar tissue at the treatment area.

Yes, we perform the areola / nipple correction for men as well.

You need to wait for the mandatory healing process that was given to you by your surgeon. You would also need a sign off confirmation and a timescale recommendation from your surgeon when you can perform the procedure.

If you are pregnant or breastfeeding we will not be able to do the procedure for you, as your body is already going through a lot of changes and we do not want to have any possible risks for you and your baby. We are happy to see you at our studio after 12 months, or once the baby is no longer dependent on you.

We would need to check which medical condition you have as certain conditions are not safe for a procedure to be done. If you have a doubt you can contact your GP beforehand to check if it is safe to proceed with the treatment.

We are happy to invite you for a consultation and we will need to get the information about your reconstruction experience and that you have consultations with your oncologist, radiologist, and cosmetic surgeon. You would need to stop any chemotherapy or radiation for 6 months, so at the consultation stage we will be able to plan your treatment journey.

Medical Micropigmentation is slightly different to a tattooing process as the application and set of pigment used for it may vary.
